Carpet and padding water extraction covers pulling water out of carpet and the padding underneath after a leak or flooding – or determining when it's better to remove and replace it instead. Carpet padding holds moisture like a sponge, and it's one of the first things that starts growing mold if it's not addressed quickly.
Homeowners in Ithaca, NY usually deal with this after a leak in a carpeted room, a washing machine overflow, or minor flooding that soaked into carpet before anyone noticed. How much can be saved depends heavily on how long the carpet sat wet and whether the water was clean or contaminated.
We start by extracting as much water as possible directly from the carpet fibers and padding using specialized extraction equipment. If the carpet and padding caught the water quickly and the water was clean, drying it in place is often possible. If padding stayed wet too long or the water source was contaminated, the padding usually needs to be removed and replaced, even if the carpet itself can be saved.
Cost depends on the square footage affected and whether padding replacement is needed on top of extraction and drying.
Keep in mind, wet padding that gets left in place – even under carpet that looks dry on top – is one of the most common sources of hidden mold growth after a water event.
