Dehumidification is the step that pulls excess moisture out of the air itself, not just off surfaces or out of materials. After a water event, humidity levels inside a home can stay elevated for days, which keeps everything from drying out properly and creates the exact conditions mold needs to grow.
Homeowners in Ithaca, NY typically need this after any water damage event – a leak, flooding, or even a period of high humidity that got trapped in a basement or crawl space. It's also common after structural drying starts, since pulling moisture out of materials raises humidity in the air around them.
We bring in commercial-grade dehumidifiers sized for the space and run them alongside air movers so moisture gets pulled out of the air as fast as it's released from wet materials. Humidity levels get checked regularly to confirm the equipment is actually keeping pace with how much moisture is being released.
Cost depends on the size of the affected area and how long the equipment needs to run – a small bathroom leak might only need a day or two, while a flooded basement can take a week or more to bring humidity back to normal.
Keep in mind, skipping this step or pulling equipment too early is one of the most common reasons mold shows up two or three weeks after a water event seemed resolved.
